St. Vincents Primary School

Sport in St. Vincent's

We at St. Vincent’s Convent Primary School understand the importance of enjoying and playing sport. We therefore endeavour to ensure maximum participation by all children in sports and to create a balance between curricular and extra curricular sporting activities.

We  provide an interesting variety of sports and activities and our pupils enjoy gymnastics, dance, orienteering and games during PE. In addition we have training in many team sports as you will see below.

Camogie and Hurling

We are fortunate to have Glen Rovers own Mary Newman to coach our boys and girls in camogie and hurling, and we have been made very welcome to use the training pitches at  Glen Rovers, Na Piarsaigh and St Vincent’s GAA clubs .

Our 5th and 6th class girls team has proudly represented our school in Sciath na Scol Camogie with some success.

Our 3rd and 4th class boys and girls teams take part in Sciath na Scol indoor hurling.

Football

Our boys and girls from 1st to 6th classes enjoy football training in the school yard  with coach Ger Dinan from Na Piarsaigh GAA.

Our senior girls’ team has taken part in Sciath na Scol in recent years and have used the training facilities at Na Piarsaigh GAA Club.  The younger boys and girls in 3rd and 4th classes play Sciath na Scol Indoor football.

Basketball

All children from 1st to 6th class get to participate in basketball training as part of their P.E. curriculum. They are  coached by Mr. Dommie Mullins, the St. Vincent’s Secondary School basketball coach, who has numerous  accolades both as a player and as a coach to his name. The training takes place in the purpose built basketball  arena in St. Vincent’s Secondary School. A number of our girls who continue on to St. Vincent’s Secondary School now play for their school, county and Ireland ladies basketball teams at various age levels.

Soccer

Our boys and girls enjoy soccer, and in recent years the senior classes have taken part in the Spar FAI Primary School 5s Soccer Programme.

Our younger players in 3rd and 4th classes enjoy  FAI Futsal indoor soccer in the nearby Parochial Hall. Our boys soccer squad are making great strides with our own Mr Foolkes.

Swimming

We are very lucky at St. Vincent’s to be in close proximity to Leisureworld Churchfield. Formal swimming lessons  are offered to all children in 4th Class, in six-week blocks yearly. Our swim teachers are qualified to Swim Ireland  standard, and all levels are catered for, from the beginner through to advanced stroke analysis and technique.

Athletics

Every year the school takes part in the Cork City School Sports which is held at MTU during the last  term. Preliminary races are held to select runners for the school team before this event. Each child in the school  gets an opportunity to participate, and many children have gone to represent their school at local and county  level in athletics.
