St. Vincents Primary School

Sport in St. Vincent's

We at St. Vincent’s Convent Primary School understand the importance of enjoying and playing sport. We therefore  endeavour to ensure maximum participation by all children in sports and to create a balance between curricular  and extra curricular sporting activities.

Our P.E. co-ordinator, Ms. M. O’ Leary works tirelessly to provide and promote a wide range of sports in the  school so that children will have a chance to experience different sports.

Swimming

We are very lucky at St. Vincent’s to be in close proximity to Leisureworld Churchfield. Formal swimming lessons  are offered to all children in 4th Class, in six-week blocks yearly. Our swim teachers are qualified to Swim Ireland  standard, and all levels are catered for, from the beginner through to advanced stroke analysis and technique.

Athletics

Every year the school takes part in the Cork City School Sports which is held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh during the last  term. Preliminary races are held to select runners for the school team before this event. Each child in the school  gets an opportunity to participate, and many children have gone to represent their school at local and county  level in athletics.

Basketball

All children from 1st to 6th class get to participate in basketball training as part of their P.E. curriculum. They are  coached by Mr. Dommie Mullins, the St. Vincent’s Secondary School basketball coach, who has numerous  accolades both as a player and as a coach to his name. The training takes place in the purpose built basketball  arena in St. Vincent’s Secondary School. A number of our girls who continue on to St. Vincent’s Secondary School now play for their school, county and Ireland ladies basketball teams at various age levels.
